Yarthe

Yarthe is an alternate Earth, where humans, elves, dwarves, and other near-human species co-exist more or less peacefully.. well. No, who am I kidding? The elves are peaceful, except for the “ghost elves”, a group who have culturally embraced the ideals of H. G. Wells’ Morlocks, complete with an unfulfilled yearning for their lost technological prowess. The dwarves are peaceful, except where their underground kingdoms cross over with the territories claimed by the ghost elves, or other peoples with whom they quarrel. The humans are no more – or less – peaceful than humans have ever been, but they are distracted from outright warfare by the burgeoning Industrial Revolution and the incursion into their world by nightmarish, unknowable entities or intelligences from some other plane of existence. Perhaps from outside the universe itself. And that’s on a good day.

Lyonesse is one of the laregest, most prosperous city-states in Europa, the cultural heart (according to its own scholars, of course, excepting the ones who have travelled widely and realise how many other civilisations claim the same) of Yarthe. Lyonesse is also home to the Collegium Soleil, the most prestigious school of magic on the continent. The only place where one can (relatively) safely learn the fine arts of Transfiguration, Alchemy, and Conjuration. It is absolutely not a haunt of vampires or demonic influences from the Underworld. Most of the time.
